Journals

Community Development

Community Development has been the official journal of the Community Development Society since 1970. Community Development is a peer-reviewed academic journal regularly published five times a year, in addition to occasional special issues. It includes a range of scholarly research, as well as a section on practice that replaces the content previously found in Community Development Practice.

The journal features articles relevant to both rural and urban communities, including topics such as community building; social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; leadership; economic development and entrepreneurship; placemaking and public art; affordable housing; technological innovations; community development theory; and teaching and pedagogy.

Local Development & Society

Local Development & Society (LD&S) was established in 2020 to explore the potentials and limitations of local growth and to test evidence from academic research and practice against relevance to local communities and society.

LD&S publishes theoretical and empirical research relevant to all aspects of localism; adapting or adopting changes in a product, content, process, or policy for a specific area or locale. Changes in local social, economic, and environmental systems continue to emerge rapidly, generating keen interest from the public, nonprofit, and private sectors, as well as by citizen groups seeking to encourage healthier and more sustainable sources of livelihoods and culture in their communities and regions.

The journal’s scope is global and of interest to diverse social scientists, planners, researchers, policy makers, students, and practitioners across myriad academic disciplines. The journal’s Open Access option makes research readily available to these and other audiences.

CD Practice

Community Development Practice or CD Practice was an open access publication long produced by the Community Development Society (CDS). In 2021, it was integrated into Community Development as a special section for practice-oriented articles, such as case studies and practitioner essays that invite dialogue with scholars.

The CD Practice archives offer back-issues that present innovative approaches, tools, and techniques in teaching and practice that can be readily applied by community development practitioners, applied researchers, and educators. CD Practice also features practice extensions of work published in the other CDS journals and books.
