PRE CONFERENCE WORKSHOP #1 – Genoa Indian School

The Indian Industrial School at Genoa was the fourth largest non-reservation boarding school established by the United States Office of Indian Affairs. The facility opened on February 20, 1884 and, like other federal Indian boarding schools, its mission was to educate Native American children in order to assimilate them into American society.

MOBILE LEARNING WORKSHOP #1 – Focus on Entrepreneurs: Providing Resources to Let Them Grow

Omaha is growing small and micro-entrepreneurs! Spend the afternoon touring and learning about the financial, educational, and physical resources available to Nebraska and Iowa’s emerging business owners. From commercial kitchen space to greenhouse plots to loans and technical assistance, these NGO’s are focused on creating a “can do” culture that is changing the landscape of North Omaha and beyond. Enjoy an optional lunch with a local foodtruck vender (approximate costs: $12-$15) or grab a “cuppa joe” at the greenhouse. *Note foodtruck and greenhouse lunch is optional and not included with registration

MOBILE LEARNING WORKSHOP #2 – North Omaha Legacy Tour

Tour of North Omaha with 4Urban.org with the goal to better understand North Omaha rich heritage, legacy and historical contributions. The tour visits small buinesses in the North Omaha Metro and is a registrered trade name of Black Votes Matter Institute.

As you explore the streets, you’ll encounter a myriad of Latino-owned businesses, each with its unique story and contribution to the community’s economic growth. From bustling markets filled with colorful fruits and spices to cozy cafes serving authentic Latin American cuisine, you’ll have the opportunity to taste, smell, and experience the flavors of our heritage. But this tour is more than just a culinary adventure. It’s a celebration of resilience and determination. MOBILE LEARNING WORKSHOP #4 – Boystown and Dana Village: Youth Transformative Care

Come experience two organizations shaping how they care for youth and young adults. When visiting Boys Town, you’ll see how the organization has given hope to many at-risk children over the past century. At Dana Village, you’ll see how Lutheran Family Services changes the lives of those aging out of foster care by providing equitable housing for young adults.

MOBILE LEARNING WORKSHOP #5 – Revitalization Association of Weeping Water (RAWW) Deep Dive
MONDAY JULY 15TH, 11:30AM to 4:30PM
Take a trip to Weeping Water and learn how to leverage social capital for rural community development. Local leaders, including representatives of RAWW and the Weeping Water Valley Historical Society, will showcase community-driven projects both planned and completed including rehabilitation and civic reuse of the Cass County Agricultural Society Auditorium and other downtown improvement projects like the Gazebo Area Restoration Project, Elam’s Landing fishing dock, and a local FFA food enterprise. A little free time will allow visits to Memory Lane Museum, Meeske Hardware and/or Grandpa Snazzy’s. Before heading back to Omaha, participate in a Weeping Water Town Hall Forum.

MOBILE LEARNING WORKSHOP #7 – Local Brewery Resiliency: Adaptive Community Development
MONDAY JULY 15TH, 11:30AM to 4:30PM
While the Omaha craft beer market shows no signs of slowing down, recent rising costs of operations, changes in consumer drinking habits, and lingering effects of the pandemic have created significant challenges among urban brewing markets. To be more resilient among these recent economical and societal shifts, craft breweries have had to adapt. In this workshop, participants will taste, experience, and explore several craft breweries in Omaha, hearing from knowledgeable brewers and community partners about their unique approaches to community development and ways they’ve adapted to best meet the needs of today’s consumers, rising costs, and post-pandemic social environment.
